Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Rectal Drainage Of Mucous Blood In A Cancer Patient?
My dad has a cancerous tumor in his bowel. He was given 5 days of radiation his last treatment was 8 days ago. He is having bloody puss like mucus come out of his rectum several times a day. He is also having cramps and pain. He has had infections in the past that were very similar to what he s experiencing now. Only difference is that he doesn t have a fever at all. In fact he says it s a little low 97.6. He is going to call the doctor first thing Monday morning. It s Saturday now will he be ok to wait that long or should he be doing something about it now?
If it is cancer of the rectum, then he need s to be evaluated for the extent of the tumble and if it is operable and stage of the disease.
He needs to be evaluated. If he is started on radiotherapy first then it suggests local advanced disease and will be operated at a later date after the completion of the radiotherapy.
What he is having at present is called radiation proctitis which will improve as the days go on and with mediations that will be prescribed accordingly.
Lets hope for a good response to the radiotherapy and then assess with an MRI and plan further treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nataraj Naidu R, General Surgeon
