What Causes Rectal Pain After Surgery For Cancer Treatment?
I recently had surgery for cancer and I ended up having a abscess in my pelvis which inturn they had to put a drain to drain the mucous out. Since the operation (Colon/Rectal Cancer) and the drain, I have been having anal/rectal pain. Why is that and is it common?
Hello, Rectal carcinoma's are geneally treated with colectomy. As you know your colon and rectum are full of feces which has millions of microbes in them. Even though during preoperative period they try to cleanse your bowel 100% clean bowel can never be achieved. So when they resect and reconnect your colon and anus there is going to be at least a mild oozing of fecal material along the wound margins. This sometimes can cause an infection and present as peritonitis where fluid accumulates. This is a common complication and is easily treated by drainage and antibiotics. Unless you are under proper care you do not have to worry much.
