What Causes Recurrent Chest Pain And Breathlessness Post Valve Replacement Surgery?

Hello Doctor, My Mother-in-Law had underwent Valve replacement surgery 10-12 years ago, recently she is again complaining of chest pain and breathlessness. We have undergone all the tests to determine the reason for pain & medications to see changes but nothing showed any result and she continues to complain pain and breathlessness. Currently we are recommended to undergo Angio-gram. Couple of months ago we were told that, we cannot do angio-gram as she had undergone valve replacement as it will turn-out to be very risky and hence we need to treat this only thru medicines but again we same Doctor has instructed us to do angio-gram. We are confused and un-clear of the risk we are taking. Kindly suggest if we can do angio-gram for a patient who has undergo a valve replacement surgery.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* There are best modalities available to evaluate valve function in the previously replaced valve as 3 D echo of the heart, MIBG scan with precise anatomy details with an expert cardiologist.

Kindly discuss the alternatives with your treating cardiologist to reveal any underlying valve vegetations, calcifications or other cusp abnormalities surrounding the replaced valve.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
