What Causes Recurrent Dizziness Long After Having Syncope?

I am a 50 year old male. About 10 years ago I was told I had syncope. However, I only got dizzy once or twice a year. However, now after a 45 minute drive or more, I have to stand up and wait about 10 seconds before I feel comfortable enough to walk because of the dizziness. Sometimes with the dizziness I get disoriented for about 5 seconds. No slur speech or anything else. Do you think this could still be syncope?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Syncope refers to loss of consciousness at least for a brief time. If this is not occurring then you do not have syncope at this point.

Dizziness can be due to different causes including : (1) abnormal heart rate/rhythm
(2)electrolyte disturbance
(3)certain diseases of the inner ear such as BPPV, menieres or vestibular neuronitis
(4)side effect of medication
(5)anemia
(6)low blood sugars but this would not occur only at this point after driving

You should consider assessment by your doctor. This would include (1)physical examination of the chest, lungs, ears, tests for inner conditions
(2)review of all medication
(3) blood tests such as full blood count, diabetes, electrolytes
(4)an ECG may be suggested

Treatment would depend on the cause found.

I hope this helps
