Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a consistent fluctuating headache for the past 5 days . Drops down to 99 sometimes but goes back up to around 102. Other symptoms are slight cough, migraine, slight nasal congestion, chills. Just taking over the counter cold and flu meds. Do you think this might be a virus and I need antibiotics to fight it?
As per my opinion, you are exhibiting all signs and symptoms of flu or flu-like infection. You are managing your situation quite well but I am concerned about fever, 102 is high fever and high fever usually is indicative of a bacterial infection.
Therefore, my advice is that you keep monitoring closely your signs and symptoms for the next 1-2 days and if the cough deteriorates or becomes more severe and deep, the fever will not normalize and your general situation will not improve but rather exacerbates then you have to consider seeing a doctor and probably get antibiotic treatment.
There is always the risk for a viral infection to be complicated with a bacterial infection and this is why it is important to monitor yourself as I mentioned above.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ervin Toçi's
