What Causes Recurrent Hiccups, diarrhea And Vomiting In Infants?

My 17 month old started childcare and first 4 weeks was ok...then he got gastro twice. It s been 2.5 weeks since his last vomit but today, after 2 weeks off childcare and then returning yesterday, he had hiccups on and off since early morning and has vomited twice again and has very loose stools. Dr s took faces samples (2) and nothing to be found, also did bloods but apart from an ongoing iron deficiency all clear. My question is - can he still be suffering from gastro after 4+ weeks?? He s been on probiotics since two weeks ago and while he s had a bit of dairy (cheese and a bit of lactose free milk) we ve held off incase of temp lactase intolerance.... I m an emetophobe and am really struggling - everyone says gastro lasts a couple days but this has been on and off for over a month

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concerns.
It is true that gastrointestinal infections last a few days and the child should be better. Your child has been presented for the first time with daycare and with more availability to different viruses and this makes him have viral gastronitestinal infections one after another. This might seem concerning but is part of his system building immunity. As long as the tests have been OK, the child is kept hydrated and he is active and energetic and no other complaint it is wise to just watch him and see a doctor if he is not active, not eating and not able to keep him hydrated or any new symptoms develop. Having him on probiotics while on diarrhea is a good idea.
Hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you.
