What Causes Recurrent Itching In The Jaws And Neck Despite Taking Steroid Shots?
My relative has been itching after any/all foods for more than 30 years. She scratches her jaws & neck until they are almost like leather. She remarked that the only thing that stopped the itching was when she has had steroid injections in her knee or back- the itching stopped for about 6 weeks. She is in her 80s, has pretty good health and is within the healthy weight range. She takes medicine for HBP, an antidepressant & 1/2 pill to help her sleep. She has been using gold bond medicated ointment to help with the itching and sometimes ice, with little/no relief. No hives, bumps, etc. and the only redness is from the severe scratching.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per your case history of itching on jaws and neck, my treatment advice is:
1. Don't scratch the lesion as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a mild antibiotic plus steroid cream like Fusiderm-B cream twice daily on it.
3. Take an antihistamine medication like Levocetirizine twice daily for 7 to 10 days.
4. Other treatment options are oral steroid, Hydroxyzine should taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
