What Causes Recurrent Leg Cramps At Night?

My husband normally has leg cramps off and on, usually at night. He drinks tonic water to help them, but hates the awful taste. Tonight he had cramps in both legs at the same time which has never happened before and they were, in his words, 100 times worse than normal. They were also in the same muscle in each leg and when I got him the tonic water, he guzzled it and said it tasted sweet.
