What Causes Recurrent Mononucleosis?

10 or 11 years ago I was diagnosed with the Epstein Barr virus- Mono. I gradually healed up and was fine. I am now 58 years old. I travel for work frequently and every now and then I get stuck with airline delays and lack of sleep along with the hard work. This just happened three days ago. I feel like mono returns when I m run down. Plus my digestive system repeatedly hurts. This is the third time the same results occurred after a taxing travel itinerary. So I m wondering if mono symptoms repeat themselves. Eventually with rest and fasting I seem to get over these bouts. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Recurrence of mononucleosis is rare since antibodies from first infection help to protect already exposed individuals. There are other medical conditions that may present with some symptoms of mono like flu or just stress. I will advise you rest well, eat healthy, and observe. If symptoms persist, you see the doctor for evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
