Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve had a perirectal abscess that was removed 7 years ago. I am exhibiting the same symptoms now. I went to a gastrologist previously but have since joined medicare and a specific doctor group for treatments. I had a colonoscopy May 15 of this year, roughly 3 and a half months ago. Should I go back to them or seek another specialist? If so, what kind?
Hi & Welcome. The recurrent perirectal abscess seems to be due to a fistula in ano.
The fistula is the tunnel that forms under the skin and connects the clogged infected glands to an abscess. It usually develops as a result of improperly drained perirectal abscess.
You are advised to consult a general surgeon or a proctologist for proper clinical examination and certain lab tests. You may be required to undergo endoanal ultrasound and or a CT scan to delineate the path of a fistula tract so that it can be easily and completely excised (fistulotomy) after draining the abscess under the general anesthesia.
Hope the suggestions given above would help you. Take care, best of your health.
