Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My boyfriend (63) gets swelled tongue every once in awhile for the last 3 years. He ends up in the hospital. No one can tell us why this happens. We ve tried to figure it out. It s happened in different places of the United States. No similar food.. We re at a lost.
His symptoms are typical to allergy only and at time not a major ingredient is always responsible for allergic reaction.. Other common cause that can cause swollen tongue can be thyroid related problems.. If he is taking any medication then it can also be a cause.. So my advice is to first of all get an allergy test done like RAST test, food challenge test along with a thyroid profile for eliminating the cause.. Once the cause is ruled out then only appropriate treatment can be done.. As of now if the swelling begins you should immediately consult Emergency room as if the swelling is severe then it can cause choking and obstruct breathing..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
