What Causes Recurring Bouts Of Elevated Pulse?

This is my second bout of very high pulse rate ( 120 to 135 BPM). I have no pain, chest pressure, or numbness. I checked Web MD for symptoms and found tachacardia (sp) but mine last two or three days. I don t drink, smoke and only drink one cup of coffee a day. The first time this happened, in Arizona, my Doctor suggested drinking more water, this didn t help. I would like tomorrow what I am dealing with. I am 68 years old and reasonable healthy.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Heart beat more than 100 times per minute is known as tachycardia. Tachycardia may result from some conditions such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear, exercise, caffeine containing drinks like coffee, tea etc, dehydration, fever, HTN, anemia, thyroid dysfunction, electrolyte imbalance, heart attack, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, some lung diseases, infections, hot weather etc.

Some investigations like ECG, exercise stress test, ECHO, CXR, thyroid function tests, CBC, s.electrolytes etc can be done to detect the underlying causes for tachycardia and then treat them accordingly. Propranolol may be taken for controlling rapid heartbeat.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General and Family Physician,
