What Causes Recurring Episode Of Vomiting During Periods In A Teenager?

My 15 year old started her period last summer (2015). Around October of last year she began to vomit once a month. It was simply one episode of vomiting, not an entire day and not over & over...just once. She feels better afterward and would generally go to bed early feeling extra tired. (she doesn t have an eating disorder & isn t sexually active....I m certain of both. :) By January of this year I was suspicious of this pattern. I started keeping track of her menstrual cycle and sure enough her one stop vomit episodes are happening when she ovulates. She s already very regular w/ a 28 day cycle. She s vomiting anywhere between day 12 & 14 of her cycle. It happened again just last night...day 12. Is this normal? Should she see a gynecologist?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

That is because the nerves passing through the ovaries are the same as those of stomach, provoking vomiting. She might be having some gastritis problems.

Give her mefenamic acid or Ibuprofen plus antacids. If no improvement can follow up with her gynecologist and gastroenterologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
