What Causes Recurring Headaches In Sleep With Swelling On Back Of Head?

At night when I try to sleep I wake up with horrible headaches but as soon as I sit up it goes away with in seconds I feel like I m it is kinda like I m not getting blood flow or something. There is swelling on the back left side of my head also. When I look in the mirror it kinda looks like the whole left side of my face is kinda swollen. I have a doctor app, tomorrow but I am kinda freaking out now now bc I ve not slept hardly at all for 3days bc of these headaches waking me up.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The pain that occurs while you sleep and relieves as soon as you sit up along with facial swelling on one side are typical symptoms of acute pulpitis related to tooth infection. You might have a decayed or infected tooth on the upper left back side of the jaw. However, the swelling on the back of the head cannot be related to this as the swelling spreads to facial areas.

I would advise you to visit a dentist for physical examination of the oral cavity to look for an infected tooth or focus of infection in the mouth. If the tooth will be infected, root canal treatment of that tooth or extraction depending on the extent of the decay can relieve the infection and pain.

If you are in too much pain, you can take Paracetamol 500 mg + Ibuprofen 400 mg (Combiflam) or Ketorolac 10 mg (Ketorol DT) up to thrice a day till you visit a dentist. I also caution you against doing heat application or hot water gargles as the pain and swelling may worsen if infection is present. So do not practice that until you consult a dentist.

I hope this answer helps you well. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
