What Causes Recurring Heart Palpitations, Cough And Tightness In Throat?

From time to time, independent of activity or food I have heart palpitations and cough, likely provoked by something grabbing my throat. No fever, no short breath, no pain in chest, shoulder, hands. It is like something is pressing onto my heart and lungs and creates all these. It does not keep me from daily activities, work or sleep. But is there, uncomfortable and uncontrollable.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM,

Understanding your concern. The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards condition known as GERD . In this condition the acidic content of stomach come back upto pharynx due to dysfunction of esophageal sphincter and cause symptoms as you mention in query . I would suggest you to :-

- Avoid eating spicy and heavy food specially at night .
- Eat at least one hour before going to bed .
- Take antacids like gelusil .

Consult gastroenterologist for proper examination . Doctor may order endoscopy of esophagus , ambulatory acid test and X-ray of digestive system to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out causes like strep throat or laryngitis . Doctor may prescribe proton pump inhibitos and H2 blockers. Severe cases need surgical correction. Doctor may also refer you to ENT specialist for throat infection or cardiologist for heart problem .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
