What Causes Recurring Loss Of Voice When Stressed?

Hi, my name is roman but my question is for about my sister who has been suffering for a disorder . It seems that if she takes tension it tends to effect her vocal chords due to which she is unable to speak for few days ...and slowly when her voice comes out after few days its like ahe has to pressurise herself to speak and the words outter out in very slow motion. Is this a serious problem??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is well recognized that patients may lose their voice when they are stressed. This may be due to spasms in the throat muscles and preventing the normal function for the speech to happen normally.
Because this is a repeated thing and because it lasts for days, it is important that your sister sees a doctor and possibly a counselor.

The doctor may help her will pills to control anxiety and stress (SSRI drugs are the most used in this case) and the counselor may help her handle her fears in a healthier way.

I hope this gives some answers to your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
