What Causes Recurring Lump Behind The Left Ear?

hello. My daughter had a lump removed from behind her left ear when she was three years old and it was unidentified, but thought to be an atypical TB virus. She is now 30 yrs old and has a small lump in the exact position as the former. Can you explain to me what an atypical TB virus is? I have advised her to go to her doctor to get it checked out

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

The nature of the lump behind the ear needs to be identified. I suggest you to get a fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the lump. FNAC is an office procedure wherein the cells are sampled from the lump with the help of a needle. The cells are stained and studies under microscope. Atypical TB is tubercle bacilli other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is less hazardous than the typical tubercle bacilli.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
