What Causes Recurring Numbness, Pain And Tingling Sensation In Hands And Arms?

Hi doc, I m not sure what I have but its painful. My hands , wrist and elbows hurt , hands get numb so bad that it wakes me when I m asleep and I have to get up n shake it off and sometimes that don t work,I get cramp s in hands and it feels like needles are going threw them. My elbows hurt so bad that I have to wear tight elbow pads and if I have my arms straight for a few minutes it stiffens and hurts to bend and vise versa, and if I take off elbow pads for a while instant pain. Its been like this for 4 to 5 yrs I work in construction field for the last 10 yrs using all sorts of power and non power tools, jack hammers, compacting wackers etc. Ran heavy equipment, shoved and hammers etc... I ve been unemployed for 2 yrs but been working side jobs doing the same things and I have no insurance to find out what s wrong, do you have any ideas what can be wrong?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Most probable cause of your symptoms in hands and elbows is cervical disc degenerative disease, cervical disc herniation and impingement of nerve roots, brachial neuritis, reiters syndrome, polymyalgia rheumatica enteropathic arthritis, thoracic outlet syndrome, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis or peripheral neuropathy.

To those who come to my clinic with similar symptoms, I suggest complete blood picture, X-ray cervical spine and if necessary MRI cervical spine. Treatment depends upon the underlying cause. For cervical disc problems and spondylitis you need rest, a neck collar is to be put around the neck while working, Tab. Ibuprofen twice daily for 10 days to reduce inflammatory pain, tab. Pregabalin 75 mg once daily for 1 month, tab. Pantop 40 mg once daily before food and if all the therapeutic options fail to give result, cervical epidural injection, physical therapy by ultrasound superficial heating and deep heating techniques, cervical traction are advised.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
