What Causes Recurring Pain In Ankles, Knees And Wrists In A Teenager?

My 16 year old daughter has been complaining on and off of her ankles, knees and wrists hurting. She is a basketball player on the HS team. She also always seems to get a cold/allergy symptoms. She recently went to a basketball camp for 3-4 days and when she came home she was fatigued, had a cough, runny nose, body aches, chills and very very fatigued. I felt like she was very run down. She slept a lot. The cold symptoms got a little better, but still has a cough. She still continued to complain of joint pain in the ankles, knees and wrists. It has continued to get worse and she can hardly lift with her wrists, she limps when she walks. She says she feels like her knees are going to pop, they feel like they are swollen. They don t look swollen to me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

From all your descriptions, I can conclude:
1. She has cold symptoms like cough
2. Currently she has joints pain including wrists, ankles and knees
3. She is fatigued

Although I should tell you that it seems that she has cold allergy now, there is a need to do some tests for joint pain. Do not worry as we will do some tests for joint pathology. And the other symptoms may only be due cold and cough.

I should also asks you:
1. Is there fever?
2. Does any of her family member suffers from arthritis or joint pathology?
3. Does this symptoms of joint pain present before she went for camping?
If not, it is more unlikely to have joint pathology. The joint pain may be due to the physical activities and feverish condition.

I would also like to suggest some tests:
1. Complete Blood Tests
2. Chest X-Ray

Meanwhile, you can following medications:
1. Paracetamol for fever
2. Anti-histamines like Cetirizine
3. Diclofenac ointment for joint pain. Apply them on joints.
4. Take rest for 2 to 3 weeks and observe whether the joint pain is increasing or decreasing or remaining the same as before

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
