What Causes Recurring Sore Throat With Neck Swelling And High WBC Count?

Hi there, I have had a re occuring sore throat for around a month.I also have a swollen neck on one side and today my doctor told me i have a high white blood cell count and wants me to have more blood tests in two wks to see if it has dropped.I have also had a fever for a few days and lost a bit of weight. I was told if my count did not rise in two wks i would have to have a camera down my throat- I am a smoker (ten a day) - I am now very worried. What could be wrong with me?Many thanks. D.

Hi,

Sore throat is a common problem, especially in smokers. Swelling in the neck on one side can be enlarged lymph node, which increases in any infection. The high white blood count also denotes active infection. Can you please specify how much weight you have lost and in what duration? Is there any history of tuberculosis contact, and burning sensation in throat? Quit smoking for the time being.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saurabh Vijay, General & Family Physician
