my son (6) has been complaining of an upset stomach for several days. at first I thought he was constipated but then he was able to go and now its been on and off for almost a week. no fever, no other symptoms. The first day when it started it came on immediately and he lost color. being 6 he doesn t quite know how to describe the pain to me. He say it just feels sick. he s not making it up, he even wanted to go to bed early tonight. I am at a loss and worried it could be something se rious. thoughts?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the recurring upset stomach and discolored stools in a child of 6 years indicate intestine infection through some sort of bacteria or virus most likely. Kindly follow basic guidelines for his faster recovery without panic:
- Allow him more liquids as boiled water, lemon juice, coconut water, home made juices, butter milk, oral rehydration salt
- Easily palatable food stuffs as rice, curd, hotpotch
- Avoid dairy fat, ice cream or junk foods
- Dispersible acetaminophen or mefenamic acid syrup serves best analgesic for this age group
- Probiotics with lacto bacillus sachets to restore disturbed GI flora

Do follow up after 24 hours about the pain and stool consistency to discuss the need of any antibiotic is there or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
