What Causes Red Colored Bowel Movement In An Infant While On Cefdinir?
Hi, my one year old infant just started on Cefdinir last night for an ear infection. His stool is brick red in color today. Should we be concerned? He is in good spirits and not experiencing any discomfort. We have left a message for a nurse to contact us. My understanding is this could be a side effect of the antibiotic interacting with iron in his diet (iron fortified formula), and thus the reddish stool. Thanks for any advice you can provide.
When iron fortified formula is being used at the same time while using cefdinir, the stool of infant might appear reddish. This is not blood, but due to iron fortified formula your one year old infant is using.
I advise to stop taking iron fortified formula for a couple of days and see the changes in your infant stool.
If still red or bloody appearance, consult with her pediatrician and run examination of stool for occult blood.
All the best.

What Causes Red Colored Bowel Movement In An Infant While On Cefdinir?
Hi, I understand your concern. Cefdinir is an antibiotic of third-generation cephalosporin used to treat upper respiratory tract infection including ear infection. When iron fortified formula is being used at the same time while using cefdinir, the stool of infant might appear reddish. This is not blood, but due to iron fortified formula your one year old infant is using. I advise to stop taking iron fortified formula for a couple of days and see the changes in your infant stool.
