What Causes Red Pimples And Itchy Rashes On Hand?

Good evening. I ve had a red, pimply and itchy rash on my hand for the last two weeks. It appeared after I was burnt sunbathing so I assumed it was sun poisoning even though I ve never gotten it on my hands before. It also has like a leathery feel to it. My concern is that it isn t going away or improving. I m not sure if it s related but I also have what appears to be a black/red raised dot on one of my fingers about the size of a pencil tip. Thank you for any help you can give.

Hello,

Most probable cause of your symptoms is dyshidrotic eczema. Other similar disorders are:
Bullous Pemphigoid
Contact Urticaria Syndrome
Epidermolysis Bullosa
Erythema Multiforme
Fixed Drug Eruptions
Friction Blisters
Irritant Contact Dermatitis
Pemphigoid
Pemphigus Vulgaris

Yours is most probably dyshidrotic eczema. The treatment is as follows:
1) Pharmacologic treatment begins with high-strength, topical corticosteroids. In recalcitrant cases, systemic corticosteroids are the next line of treatment.
2) Clobetasol, Fluocinonide, Prednisone, Betamethasone and Triamcinolone are topical steroids effective in treatment.
3) Tacrolimus 0.1% or Pimecrolimus 1% are effective.
4) Methotrexate, Azathioprine, cyclosporine are also effective
5) Antihistamines like Loratadine and Hydroxyzine.

You need a prescription for above mentioned drugs. So please consult a dermatologist and discuss the above conditions for specific diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
