I have a rash, it started on the right side of my mouth/nose area, it turns red, no itching, can be painful with some clear fluid filled areas, it dries then gets scaly, it the spread to the left side of my mouth and nose area. with the same progression. Do you think bacterial or fungal?

Hello,
Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.

From, what you have mentioned it looks like a bacterial infection – most likely impetigo. Impetigo is a superficial skin infection. It is quite contagious though, if you touch the area of rash and then without washing your hands touch another part of your face or body, then you will transfer the bacteria to the skin surface of the new part and rash then appears in the new part. Hence your rash spread from the right side of your face to the left side.

Hence, if you have impetigo you should maintain strict personal hygiene and should not share towels etc.

However, impetigo can be easy to treat and with proper treatment, the rash heals well without any complications. Treatment is by an antibiotic called Flucloxacillin 500 mg four times a day for 1 week (provided you are not allergic to penicillin). If you are allergic to penicillin, then take Erythromycin 250 mg four times a day for 1 week. Either of these antibiotics are prescription only medicines, hence you need to see your doctor first.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

I hope this answer has helped you.
