What Causes Red Rashes On The Arms After Recovering From Fever?

Beginning toward the end of last week, my husband felt that he had a fever, and got very chilled for a couple of days. Now he does not have a head fever, but after the fever went away he broke out in a dark red rash on his upper arms, elbows, and from the elbow to the top of his forearms. He also has red rash, not as dark, on his thighs. There is actually a couple of blisters above his elbow as well. A couple of days ago he had a bit of a sore throat, and had some phlegm. That part is better. He sounds a little hoarse now. His throat is starting to hurt more and more. The arms are red and dry and hot. Thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think your husband is suffering from scarlet fever. It is caused by Streptococcus gr A. The disease is treatable with antibiotics penicillin and Cefalosporin which prevent most complications. Outcomes with scarlet fever are typically good if treated. Long-term complications as a result of scarlet fever include kidney disease, rheumatic heart disease, and arthritis. It was a leading cause of death in children in the early 20th century.

Take care.

Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help you.
