Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi visiting NYC (from Australia). Woke up this morning with red swollen under eyes. Not really itching though. Thought it might be due to jet lag, but have tried teabags, icepacks, Telfast but still swollen 24 hours. Have now just taken a Benedryl tablet. (female, age 54)
I have read the whole history and understood the problem of the swollen eye and you would like to know whether to apply heat or ice. Ice still will be the best option and heat increases local temperature and blood circulation and may allow more swelling to occur. The swelling occurs due to the typical anatomical potential space wherein all the edema and blood track down to cause the swelling. You may please continue with Bactrim DS twice daily and add on an anti-inflammatory medicines like Ibuprofen 3 times daily. Apply ice-cold packs.
Wishing you an early recovery. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
