What Causes Redness And Bumps On Lips Despite Using Petroleum Jelly?

Hi, I have been dealing with dry lips for a long time. I've recently gotten into the habit of using lip balm and I guess I've been using greater amounts of lip balm at a time than previously. I use Vaseline lip therapy. I've had this allergy before, but right now I'm experiencing red lips with tiny, irritated looking bumps and my vermilion border is red. How do I treat this quickly and prevent it in the future?

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query redness and bumps on lips despite using petroleum jelly occur probably due to traumatic injury to inner lip leading to accumulation of blood. But there can be other reasons also like allergic reaction , sun burn or side effects of certain medicine . It could be mucocele leading to accumulation of saliva in clogged duct of salivary gland.

I would suggest you to consult oral physician for proper examination and to rule out other causes like hematoma , cold sore or herpes. This is usually harmless . It usually go away few days without any treatment. If it persist then consult dermatologist. Also take over the counter anti histamine like benadryl.

Doctor may give antibiotics, anti allergic along with anti inflammatory. For now maintain oral hygiene , do listerine mouth wash rinses and give cold compresses .
