What Causes Redness And Irritation In The Throat Of A Child?

My grandson has a red irritation on his throat. He is 9 years old and has been checked 3 times in the last 10 days. It is not strep, but his appetite is poor, missed a week of school and is complaining of a lot of pain. Has been gargling with salt water and is now on an antibiotic, but nothing makes the pain go away. He had his tonsils and adenoids out last November 2015.

Thank you for consulting HCM.

This picture is suggestive of inflamed throat, that could be due to viral or bacterial infection. Viral infection will not get better on antibiotics.
Further tests include complete blood count (CBC) to asses the white blood cells count and morphology. Throat swab and culture can be useful to detect if there is bacterial infection.

Take care and best wishes.
