What Causes Redness And Swelling Along The Cuticle Of The Toe Nail?

My right big toenail stopped growing 3 months ago after a pedicure. There redness and swelling along the side and cuticle along the bottom of the nail. It is tender if my shoes are tight but pain is mild. I can press on it with just mild pain. My primary gave me Keflex 500mg for 7 days. I don t see much improvement ? Do you know what causes the problem? Do you know how to treat it ? Could it be gout or fungus ?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be an early sign of something called “paronychia”.

You have to start on antibiotics preferably Ampiclox and apply antifungal creams like Clotrimazole also.

If there is pus, it has to be drained.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
