What Causes Redness And Swelling In The Left Foot And Ankle?

My husband has an extremely swollen, red, and hot to the touch left foot and ankle. No injury if any kind recently. Went to ER lastnight they did ultrasound and xrays...all negative. They gave antibiotics a pain pill and an anti-inflammatory Rx. Tonight he is in plenty of pain still, swelling has not gotten better, maybe worse. It is vety very red and warm to the touch. Should we go back to the ER?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

He should be seen again, as soon as possible.

The symptoms are in keeping with possible cellulitis of the lower limb. This is an infection involving the skin and underlying tissues.

Though it can sometimes respond to oral medication, in many cases, iv medication is necessary for the symptoms to improve especially if there are any other illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, problems with circulation.

He should be taken back to be seen.

I hope this helps
