What Causes Redness Around The Cut On Application Of Vicks?
I put by Vicks on my sons cut and a bandaid. Now the cut part has a new layer of skin but all the skin around it is red and seems like the skin is peeling at the edges. He took the bandaid off and went swimming before I noticed the redness around it. Could the Vicks have burned him?
As per your query you have applied vicks on open wounds and there is redness around the wounds . Although vicks has ver good healing property but when applied to open cuts it some times create problem . Vicks may cause local irritation directly on the skin and surrounding areas. Camphor and menthol can irritate open skin and can cause redness at application sites. Local side effects can be reduced by using only a thin layer of vicks , by keeping the area where Vicks was applied open instead of covered and by avoiding excess heat at the applied area. I would suggest you to wash or clean your wound with hydrogen peroxide and apply betadine on it , keep it uncovered .If redness still persist or get worse then consult doctor .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
