What Causes Redness In Arm With Itching And Swelling??

My 18 yr old daughter has had a fever (101-105) the past couple of days. A cough that seems more related to throat than chest. But this morning her right arm is red hot, itchy and a bit swollen in the elbow area. She had an allergy shot on Friday, with no incidence (for cat/dog/dust mites).

Hello.

I went through your daughter's history and would like to make suggestions for her as follows:

1. As there is high fever, I would think of an infection, mostly viral.

2. I would like to know for what condition she is on allergy shot - allergic rhinitis or asthma or both.

3. Itching and swelling may be due to an allergic reaction to a drug she might have consumed for fever, may be an analgesic or antibiotic.

4. Were I treating her, I would suggest her rest, plenty of fluids to maintain hydration, paracetamol for fever, cetirizine or hydroxyzine for itching. Warm saline gargles and a cough syrup will help her for cough

5. Should she develop pain or tenderness at elbow, I would suggest you to get her examined by a doctor to rule out joint infection. In that case, a doctor may suggest her investigations to find out the cause.
