Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Last night I suddenly developed a redness in my left eye. It had been fine and then when I started to wash my face before going to bed, I noticed my eye was really blood shot from the retina to the outside part of my eye. I had not had any pain in my eye or noticed anything unusual. It has been like that all day today. I have been putting eye drops in my eye but it hasn t seemed to help the redness go away. Could this be caused by a blood vessel that burst? It does not seem to affect my vision. Just looks awful. I have had cataract surgery in the past.
The type of redness that has developed in your eye can be due to spontaneous rupture of blood vessel in the white area of the eye. This can happen due to sudden increase in blood pressure, minor injury (like pillow), lifting of weights, constipation etc.
The hemorrhage is usually not accompanied by any pain or loss of vision. If that happens you are required to consult your ophthalmologist. It will take around 3 week for the redness to clear. no need to to use any specific medicine. You can take vitamin-c rich diet like lemons, oranges, gooseberry.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saurabh Mittal, Ophthalmologist
