What Causes Reduced Blood Flow While Donating Blood?

I just went to donate blood. After half a pint was collected the flow stopped. I was told it was a clot. It also hurt like the dickens several times after the needle was inserted. I have given blood since 1981 and NEVER had this problem. Consequently, the gentlemen next to me had a problem with the blood flow too even though the nurse kept on saying how big his veins were.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite common and may be due to reduced squeezing. You can gently squeeze the hands while donating blood for an uninterrupted blood donation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
