While I realize that each case in unique, is it possible for a person who has suffered a stroke and lost 50% of their vision, to regain a portion of their vision? My father recently had a stroke and her is 65. Lastly, again, operating under the premise that every case is different, the doctor said his low hdl (around 20) was the cause. Is it possible for this to be the primary cause? I live out of state and information from them is a bit murky. Any and all feedback is appreciated.
Yes it is possible to at least partially regain his vision thanks to new synapses (connections) being formed and other unharmed brain areas undertaking the lost function. Generally improvements happen during the first 3-6 months after that not much is to be expected (although as you yourself said each case is different). Of course the bigger the stroke area the lesser the chances. As for the reason, there are many risk factors for stroke, I don't know what your father has been tested for. Low HDL is a risk factor as well as age but saying one has a risk factor is not equal to that being a primary cause. Even when all tests are done there is a 20% of patients where the cause of a stroke is not found.
