What Causes Regurgitation In An Elderly Person?

Hello Dr Rynne...My mother is 88 years old, for the last 2 weeks she has been unable to keep her food down, spitting it up after a few minutes..she s lost about 5 lbs because of this...I got her some gaviscon thinking it might be gastric reflux, she s been taking it since saturday, she still regurgitates , but not as much as she has in the first 2 weeks...Any ideas? thank you....

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & |Welcome to HCM.
I appreciated your concern for your beloved mother.
Tumor (cancer) of the oesophagus should be ruled out.
After having gone through the history given I am of the opinion that your mother seems to be having some problem with her oesophagus ('food pipe'). It could be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or its complications like stricture, achalasia or tumor (cancer). I advise you to take your mother for proper clinical examination and certain tests like Barium X-ray, endoscopic examination of the oesophagus and stomach to confirm the diagnosis.
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful.
