I have Retroperitoneal Fibrosis in the tube between my kidney & bladder it is only a small amount. I have a severe stabbing pain in left abdomen. The hospital has prescribed steroids. I am reluctant to take them because of the horrific side affects. I already suffer from type 2 diabetes & hypertension. Is there any other treatment available? I am male aged 59.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
The cause of retroperitoneal fibrosis is not well understood, but it is believed to be related to the abnormal growth of fibrous tissue in the retroperitoneal space. Other contributing factors include previous abdominal surgery, infections, and certain medications. For treating retroperitoneal fibrosis, there are a few options other than steroids, such as:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief. Interventional radiology procedures such as angioplasty or stenting. Immunosuppressant drugs such as azathioprine or methotrexate. Surgery to remove the fibrous tissue. It is essential to consult your doctor to determine the best course of treatment for you, considering your medical history and any other factors that may affect your health.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
