Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have ridges in my fingernails and they break very easily also my hair seems to break easily too. I am in good health and don t take any medications and am in my 50s just curious if they are related or should I just take a multi vitamin. I have recently (last year or so) started eating healthier, I no longer drink soda just water or fruit juice. (V8 types no high fruticose corn syrup). Thank you for your time My name is Lucy. Thanks again
The most likely possibility of brittle nails and hair is deficiency of vitamins....I would suggest a healthier diet and life style which you have mentioned you are following already. Start oral multivitamins....most importantly multivitamins containing zinc and iron. Also in females these changes may occur with the variations in hormone levels such as pregnancy or menopause and tend to become better after sometime.
If your problem persists after a couple of months while using multivitamins or you start experiencing any other symptoms I would advise you consult your local physician. I hope this answers your query. Please feel free to contact HCM again in case you have any concerns. Wishing you good health.
