What Causes Right Eye Pain And Blindness While Treating B-cell Lymphoma?

Sir my father is an cancer patient since last 1.5 yrs. He is having large Bcell lymphomatic cancer. It was detected in ileum and under gone chemotherapy and he was alright for 6 months. After that sickness again affected the left lobe of head and he had under gone 24 days of radiation in last December . after that he was advice to take an whole body pet scan and detected three new growth in stomach in walls , outside lungs etc. The growth was so small and we are adviced another 6 chemotherapy of 21 days interval.each chemo is taken as a course of consecutive three days. After that another ct was taken and no problem was detected. It was done in last march . after that from may onwards he is having pain in right eye and head. Also he lost his right eyes vision after that we take ct scan , MRI etc but no growth was founded . also his pain and blindness is still there. Now the intensity of pain is low. But no vision to right eye. Also so far we consulted 3 neuro surgeons in three different hospitals Three of them have 3 different opinions. Also we consulted opthalmologist he also said that eye is normal. One neuro said that the vein is weak there and he is giving an steroid now. My question is what might be reason for such a blindness. Is it occurred as side effect of some medicine. Expecting an reply..... Thanking you Jefin Antony

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I doubt (which is a sophisticated guess) that the eye itself is the problem. It’s quite easy for an ophthalmologist to check the eyes, even the insides. All you need is a medication that widens the pupils, a special magnifying glass and a lamp in an otherwise dark room. So, if the problem was a classical eye issue, even an unexperienced ophthalmologist would have noticed it. Of course, an OTC-eye-scan or a sonography of the eye could be added.

However, I rather believe the cause is to be found somewhere in the nerves and or the brain. Nerve damage can be the result of chemotherapy. So you should ask the doctors who gave your father the second round of chemotherapy or do some research yourself about the side-effects of the substances they gave him.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Alexander Davis, General & Family Physician
