Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My doctor thought I might have a blood clot in my lung because of the symptoms of shortness of breath and a pain in my left side and cramps in my legs. I had a DVT, a chest x-ray and blood test with a D-dimer. The chest X-ray was clear, the DVT was clear but the D-dimer was 60. She had me go back and retest the D Dimer and it was 64 so she sent me for a CT scan of the chest and they found no clots. What else could cause the D-dimer to be elevated? Terri
Elevated D-dimer (A positive result) indicates the presence of an abnormally high level of fibrin degradation products. This will indicate a significant blood clot formation in the body. However, it will not tell the location as well as the cause of this phenomenon. Also, some other conditions like pregnancy, heart disease, injury, some cancers as well as some liver diseases may also result in increased levels of D-dimer.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
