What Causes Salty Taste In Mouth Of An Elderly Lady?

My 85 yr old mother is experiencing a very salty taste in her mouth which is not allowing her to eat very much because she says everything tastes horrible. She also is smelling an odor that only she smells at certain times.
What, if anything, may cause this? She is so depressed over this.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query your mother who is aged is suffering from salty taste in mouth which is a condition called dysgeusia which mainly occurs in elderly people because of medications, oral health problems, antibiotics, blood pressure pills, drugs to lower anxiety, and antidepressants.

As your mother is depressed all the times it is exaggerating there condition. I would suggest them to avoid contact with these substances. Maintain proper oral hygiene of there oral cavity by brushing twice a day. Use of antimicrobial mouth wash. Use sugarless candies to stimulate salivary secretion.

Use citrus fruits, a pinch of sugar along with green tea, lemon and put few drops on tongue it will resolve there problem. Visit dentist once and get scaling done properly.

If this salty taste is one sided it could be because of injury to seventh or ninth cranial nerve or any pressure on that. In that case you should visit neurologist once and get it examined properly.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get well Soon.

Best Wishes,
