What Causes Sensitive Skin Under The Tongue Around The Ball Of Barbell?

I have my tongue pierced twice with two separate bars, the piercing is about two years old. on the underside of my tongue surrounding one piercing I noticed there is some extra skin surrounding the ball at the base of the barbell, it is a little sensitive to touch but not very much. I don't know how long it's been there, not too long I would think because I just saw it a couple of days ago. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of what it might be && how I can properly treat it or get rid of it completely.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

The extra growth is a normal body response to cover the region, which the body thinks is a wound. I would first recommend you keep moving the stud in place too and fro, so that the hole/piercing remains adequately closed.

Now that the growth is already present I would recommend a visit to a surgeon, who would take less than 5 minutes to remove the growth and prescribe you a few medications to help promote adequate healing.

Best wishes.
