What Causes Sensitivity In Tooth After Replacing Filling?

back in Dec I had a mercury filling taken out and replaced with a clear filling. The tooth was not at that time bothering me. As the dentist was taking my old filling out, I heard something similar to a cracking sound. I didn't say anything at the time because he and his assistant didn't say anything. Since Dec my tooth has been bothering me when I drink anything hot or cold. I have seen my dentist 3 time since the filling was replaced ( i had a root canal another tooth during Jan of this year) My dentist said "sometimes there will be sensitivity after a tooth has been worked on" and he also advised me to use sensodyne tooth paste, which i have been using 2 time a day. I don't think i should still be experiencing this pain 2+ months after the visit. He wants me to wait until me teeth cleaning appointment in June. I don't know what to do?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain sensitivity of the tooth to hot and cold and hearing a crack sound when the filling was removed is indicating that during removal of old silver filling to place tooth coloured filling there has been exposure of nerves present in the centre of the tooth due to deeper removal of tooth material along with filling..
It is leading to nerve irritation causing pain and sensitivity..
No, sensitivity after filling of tooth does not last for so long of about 2+ months and generally subsides in a week or even less..
I would suggest you to consult an Endodontist and get an x ray of tooth done and if the nerve exposure is evident he can do a Root Canal treatment of tooth for resolving the condition..
s of now if there is pain you can take painkillers like Ibuprofen and also avoid very hot or cool foods and take foods with average temperature..
Continue with desensitizing toothpaste and can also apply numbing gel containing Lignocaine..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
