Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM. The
fatigue does not explain the "light sensitivity" you are talking about. A know diabetic patient, even with strict glycemic control, in the long run is prone to develop Ophthalmologic complications of
diabetes. Usually the early non-proliferative retinal complications of diabetes go unnoticed and when they manifest they have usually progressed to proliferative or
macular disease. However, more commonly they manifest as blurring of vision.
Photophobia can be a manifestation of numerous diseases, both inflammatory and non-inflammatory, the site of pathology varying from the anterior segment (cornea,
conjunctiva) to the posterior segment or even the
occipital lobe or thalamus of the brain. In the absence of pain, redness etc. anterior segment inflammatory pathology can be ruled out. But, posterior segment pathology or neural or brain pathology need to be ruled out, specifically when you have occasional
headaches. It may or may not be a complication of your Type 2 diabetes. Again, diabetic patients should have routine eye examination by an ophthalmologist at regular intervals for early diagnosis and prompt management of complications before they progress to a more severe form. Therefore, please visit your local ophthalmologist who can examine or do some investigations to rule out any disease. Regards. Dr. Kaushik
