What Causes Severe Abdominal Bloating And Excessive Weight Gain In An Elderly Person?
Hi, my 81 year old mother is experiencing significant stomach bloating and weight gain of almost 15 pounds since mid-April. She has no pain or discomfort and we cannot tie it to any major change in diet. She has had two major surgeries since December 2016: breast cancer & removal of one breast and she s had a lumbar laminectomy. Since all the medications she has be given such as Anastrozole (Arimidex) and Gabapentin (Neurontin) have similar side effects, we cannot tell if either or both are contributing to the problem. Neither or primary physican or her oncologist seem very concerned. Any thoughts?
A certain degree of bloating is normal but in case of excessive bloating, it may be a sign of food allergy, hiatal hernia, IBS or inflammatory bowel diseases. So you should do gastroenterology work up but first try to change your dietary habits, it means: eat smaller meals but more frequently, avoid fried and spicy food, take menta tea, avoid alcohol and coffee, eat probiotics and milk products, boiled food and vegetables.
Also, there are medications such as Flobian, Magnesium oxide or certain Laxatives which may relieve such symptoms of this continue. If there is no improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
