What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain And Nausea While On Methadone And Morphine?

I am 64 years old, with a bad back. My pain management Dr. started me with methodone and am presently on morpine and see him every 2 months for a shot of a nerve block and demeral. Recently I have had severe stomach pain, nausea, constipation and have been loosing weight slowly over a 4 or 5 year period. I recently saw a gastrinologist who has set me up with a EDG and Colonoscopy. What is he looking for?

Hi,

Since you have onset of new symptoms like pain, nausea, constipation and it could be due to a number of reasons: e.g., the medication after effects. However, since you have had loss of weight and constipation, it's important to look for some serious causes e.g., a tumors or strictures causing an obstruction in your gut for which a EDG and colonoscopy is advisable at your age. It's good to rule out those causes and I agree with the gastroenterologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Preeti Jolly, Endocrinologist
