What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain In A Child?

Hi, my four year old daughter has been complaining about what appears to be severe belly pain. Started about 13 hours ago. Says it is just above belly button. Woke up in the night crying. Woke up this morning and threw up bile only, twice. Is this the flu? Or something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Flu may cause abdominal pain and vomiting in children but is not the typical presentation. Other viral infections may cause similar symptoms as well.

Because her abdominal pain is severe and she is throwing up it is best to have the child examined and rule out acute abdomen first (acute causes of abdominal pain).

If the abdominal examination is within normal limits then she just needs to be monitored and also it is important to be kept well hydrated (she will need oral rehydration solutions).

I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. Let me know if I may assist you further.

Regards,
