Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain, Rectal Bleeding And Swollen Gums?
I have had severe abdominal pain since yesterday. Throughout the night I got up throughout the night to use the restroom, believing I needed to have a movement but nothing happened. Toward the early morning hours I experienced relief with diarrhea, however, my lips and gums became swollen and inflamed making it difficult to brush my teeth. As the day went on, I continued to experience severe abdominal pain and blood in the diarrhea - then just blood. I called my doctor and they recommended I go to the emergency room because they would not be able to evaluate me fully in the office. I have a history of Celiac disease and Microscopic colitis. The abdominal pain is continuing with relief after going the bathroom and the blood is not as noticeable. I really don t want to waste my time at the ER if it is not necessary. Are there any suggestions? I never experienced the rectal bleeding, swollen gums and lips before
Your symptoms are suggestive of an acute flare of inflammatory bowel disease. You may be having crohns disease which forms one part of the spectrum of this condition. An acute flare may be brought on by many factors such as a sudden change in the diet, spicy food or an abdominal infection. It is best you go to the hospital and get yourself evaluated by a gastroenterologist. You will probably need a colonoscopy to check for the extent of the inflammation.
