What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain When Diagnosed With Mesenteric Lymphadenitis?

I have a twelve year old son. When he was 4, he had severe abdominal pain. The family doctor sent him for testing for an appendix. It was negative and we were sent home. Over the last 8 years, he has experienced intermittent abdominal pain, chills, fever, his coloring has gotten worse. He has had an up and lower GI. Just recently, he has had diareaha for the last 6 days, non-stop. He has been admitted for fluids, had another CT scan done and lab work. His WBC is normal. Scan shows swollen lymph nodes. His scan from 2014 (from another episode ) showed swollen lymph nodes too. He weighs 92 pounds and is 5 6 . You can see every rib on his body. He has a twin brother who is also 5 6 and weights 145. Help! I keep being told he does not have an appendicitis (which I know) but what is wrong? He has taken Levsin (with no relief). I am worried something is being ignored. I don t know what to ask for.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* In children, abdomen lymph node enlargement is quite normal following certain bacterial and viral infections of the gut.

* As the multiple scan and reports are not indicative of appendix including CT report, I assure you that does not stress out for appendicitis.

* Thorough diet care with regular consultant follow up is best advised from this platform.

* More important is the clinical symptoms and progress of the same rather than the size of asymptomatic lymph node when it is concerned with previous bacterial infection only.
* Do keep a record of his height, weight over a period of time for the best home assessment. Do feel free to get further medical assistance through the website.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
