Hi,

The copper coil by itself can cause period like crampy pain. However it is more in initial 2-3 month after insertion and becomes less as it settle within the womb. It can be relieved by use of simple pain medications. Pain can also be there if the copper coil moves in its position within the cavity of the uterus. However, after a year of insertion and presence of itchiness suggests that it could be due to infection.

Ideally, a swab should be done to confirm presence of infection. Given the situation it might be useful to take a course of antibiotic that is effective against a broad range of organisms. Co-amoxacillin (Augmentin 625 mg) can be taken three times daily for a week. Please check that you are not allergic to it. You can take paracetamol/ ibuprofen (if not asthmatic). Please arrange for a gynaecologist's examination and scan if necessary to ensure that the coil is in its correct position and infection has cleared.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sabina Hussain, OBGYN, Gynecologic Oncology
